First UK 32 Channel 1608 Sold

KMR has sold the first 32 channel API 1608 console in the UK to record producer Ethan Johns (son of legendary producer and drummer Glyn Johns).
Ethan Johns is a record producer, engineer, mixer, musician, and songwriter who has worked with such artists such as Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Ray LaMontagne, Rufus Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Crowded House and others.

Ethan Johns is the owner of indie record label "Three Crows Music" which is home to Julianna Raye, Sarabeth Tucek and pianist/composer Dave Palmer. The deal was concluded at an invitation only event at the company’s north London showrooms on Tuesday 18th November where over 80 guests examined the new console and met API Managing Director Gordon Smart and Sales Director Dan Zimbelman who had flown in for the event.

The full specification of the Johns’ purchase is:
32 Channel API 1608
32 x 548B Discrete Input Module with Mic-Pre
12 x 550A Discrete EQ Module
4 x 560 Discrete Graphic EQ Module
8 Main Busses
8 Aux Sends
Control Room section with 8 reverb returns
Master Section with echo/cue, buss trim, talkback etc..

The 1608 is a truly remarkable console which epitomizes the increasing quality and popularity of true analogue recording in the industry. However, the fact that producers of the stature of Glyn and Ethan have been so impressed with it says more than any sales patter possibly could. The 1608 will be a centerpiece of many new studio builds for years to come; the classic magic sound of API, coupled with a design built for integration with DAWs and outboard is exactly what the modern music producer is looking for.

UAD-2 Available Now!

At long last we are proud to announce that the next generation of Universal Audio's much-loved plug-in platform is now here and shipping in the UK. UAD2 boasts up to 10 times the DSP power of UAD1, some very exciting new plug-in partners, and extremely attractive upgrade offers.

UAD2 comes in 3 different card types - Solo, Duo and Quad (this refers to the number of SHARC processors on the card). Solo has x2.5 the power of UAD1, Duo has x5 the power of UAD1, while Quad has a whopping x10 the power of UAD1.

Each card then has three associated package options: Core, Flexi and Nevana, making a total of 9 possible UAD2 packages.

The Base package provides the basic UA 'Mix Essentials II' plug-in selection (consisting of the 1176SE compressor, CS-1 channel strip, Pultec EQP-1A equaliser and Realverb Pro reverb) plus a $50 plug-in voucher. This is the lowest cost UAD2 option and is ideal for existing UAD1 users who have sufficient plug-ins and just need extra DSP power.

The Flexi package provides the same Mix Essentials II selection plus a $500 plug-in voucher, allowing customers to enjoy extra power and acquire more plug-ins.

Finally, the Nevana packages provide Mix Essentials II plus key UA Neve plug-ins, allowing the user to create his own virtual Neve console of 32, 64 or 128 channels!

New UA plug-in partners include Valley People, Empirical Labs, Moog, Harrison and Little Labs, which join UA's already impressive partner list of Boss, Helios, Neve, Roland, SPL, Fairchild and Pultec.

Customers can run UAD1 and UAD2 concurrently, and for a limited period the following crossgrade promos are available:

All existing UAD1 users can crossgrade ALL their authorised plug-ins to UAD2 completely FREE of charge until the end of 2008, and secondly registered UAD1 owners will also be rewarded with bonus UAD$ vouchers up to $250 for each registration of a UAD2 card before the end of the year. Additionally, UA's existing $150 promo will continue until the end of September, so customers can bag themselves an extra voucher if they move fast!

API Legacy Plus for Fish Factory Studios

KMR have proudly supplied the UK's first new API Legacy Plus to London based Fish Factory Studios.

API, one of the world's premier manufacturers of high-end analogue pro audio gear, is enjoying a resurgence around the world and in Europe in particular, where sales of the company's outboard signal processors are brisk. Now, following the lead of the numerous U.S. facilities that have installed API consoles, Fish Factory Studios in north London is enjoying the distinction of being one of the premiere studios in the world to purchase an API console — in this case a 32-channel API Legacy Plus.

This may be the digital age, but analogue audio aficionados, such as Antonio Feola, chief engineer and owner of Fishfactory Studios, still value the quality of sound that can only be achieved with a discrete input path through the mixing console to a tape machine. "I needed something that was reliable with a great analogue sound," said Feola, who purchased the Legacy to replace an aging and increasingly unreliable console. "API is at the top of a very short list of manufacturers who still build their equipment with discrete analogue circuitry. API's reputation is unrivaled, and the Legacy Plus is quite affordable."

Crowley & Tripp Naked Eye - Roswellite

The Naked Eye Roswellite now joins the El Diablo as the toughest and most powerful ribbon microphones ever created for music recording and live sound reinforcement.
The Naked Eye Roswellite features the same True Dual Voicing design and carefully crafted tone of the Naked Eye Classic, plus it adds the power of the Crowley and Tripp nanocomposite ribbon material – Roswellite – that was first introduced in the famously disruptive El Diablo Mercenary Edition.

The popular Naked Eye ribbon microphone has become a favorite of recording musicians for reliably capturing the thickest guitar tone, and adding Roswellite expands its capability into kick drums, snare, bass, and the rigors of live touring and sound reinforcement. There is no other ‘foil’ ribbon microphone at any price that can match its tone, sound pressure level handling and toughness.

SSL AWS900+ Announced

The original AWS 900 established a new category in modern console design. Every inch a ‘real SSL’, it scooped the 2005 TEC Award in the Large Format Console category – despite measuring just 56" across!

Installed in more than 150 of the most prestigious project studios in the world, this unique console has already notched up an impressive catalog of credits from the Rolling Stones’ ‘A Bigger Bang’ to Alicia Keys’ ‘Unplugged’ and Barbra Streisand’s ‘Guilty Pleasures’. Now the new AWS 900+ builds on the successful formula by adding even tighter integration and better control over major DAW platforms, enhanced displays and meters, and a sleek ‘platinum’ styling.

Superanalogue Mic Pres and signal processing, comprehensive monitoriing and superb workflow-orientated ergonomics make working on the AWS 900+ fast, simple and inspiring.

Solid State Logic mixing systems are the de facto standard in audio production, valued for their unrivalled audio quality and control ergonomics. SSL was the first company to integrate automation and machine control into the mixing console, and it pioneered surround mixing.

The AWS 900+ delivers the same powerful integration benefits to DAW users, who face similar challenges with an array of equipment (Mic Amps, Effects, Controllers etc.) to produce professional results from a modern DAW.

New additions to the SSL XRack family

SSL are excited to announce 2 new modules for the XRack modular studio system.

XRack Input Module.

The Solid State Logic Input module for the XRack is designed to handle the varied input needs of the project studio. Made using the same SuperAnalogue circuitry from the XL9000K console, the XRack Input module contains;
• SuperAnalogue Mic pre, with 75dB of gain
• Variable impedance control
• Phantom power and phase reverse
• Line input with separate level control
• Front-panel Instrument input
• High- and Low-pass filters
• XRack Bus output for integration with future modules.

XRack EQ Module.

The Solid State Logic EQ module brings the legendary SSL twin-curve E and G series EQ module from our large-format consoles into an affordable package in combination with the XRack.
• 4-band parametric EQ with variable “Q” on the mid bands
• Shelf/bell control on the High and Low bands.
• Switchable E or G series circuits

The 2 new modules integrate fully with the XRack, giving Total Recall™ of all pots and switches. This can either be recalled from the XRack’s internal memory, 9-pin from a console such as the AWS900, or via your choice of sequencer.

Both modules are list priced at £440+VAT each, and will be shipping from early March 2006.

AWS900 Wins TEC Award

Finally – conclusive proof that size doesn’t matter. Measuring in at just 57”, it may be a mere baby stacked up against one of our XL 9000 K consoles, but that didn’t stop the modest yet powerful AWS 900 take the top honours in the Large Format Console Technology category at the recent Tec Awards in New York.

The Award was graciously accepted by SSL’s Director of Commercial Applications, (and AWS designer) Chris Jenkins, together with SSL Inc.’s President, Phil Wagner. “Being recognised for our technical excellence is always appreciated and we’re thrilled to receive the Tec Award,” said Chris. “We’d like to thank all the current and future owners of the AWS 900 for helping it achieve this level of recognition. Roll Music Folcrom

KMR are proud to announce that we have been appointed as UK dealers of the wonderful Folcrom by Roll Music.

The RMS216 FOLCROM is a high quality passive mixer intended for analogue summing of multichannel digital mixes. The sound is up to you and your preamps.

Each of the Folcrom's sixteen input channels features a balanced analogue connection on standard 8-channel DB25 connectors and a pair of pushbutton switches to assign that channel to the Left or Right output, neither, or both. It uses no active circuitry and provides no gain or level controls. By controlling all aspects of the mix from within the DAW, automation and recallability are perfectly preserved. Up to 16 different tracks or submixes can then be routed to the Folcrom for summing in the analogue domain.

The absence of faders, EQ, aux sends, pan knobs, or any other superfluous features not only preserves your software automation, it also allows for an elegant passive circuit using no amplifiers, ICs, transistors, capacitors, or transformers whatsoever. The simplicity of the fully balanced, symmetrical signal path allows the use of no-compromise passive components for an absolutely transparent signal path. The unit passes signals "from DC to daylight" without colouration.

Pro Tools 7

Pro Tools 7 Software: Power to Create
Shipping Soon

Digidesign® Pro Tools® 7 software represents an evolutionary leap in the creative power of the industry-standard digital audio workstation. With a wealth of new features and enhancements, Pro Tools 7 software delivers significantly expanded recording and editing capabilities for audio and MIDI, greater mixing power and flexibility, enhanced efficiency, and improved ease of use. The result is a whole new set of tools that advances the art of audio production.

More Compositional Tools
Take advantage of new Instrument Tracks for improved integration with virtual instruments and MIDI sound modules. Work with REX and ACID files — two of the most popular formats for loops and samples. Group any combination of audio and MIDI regions together to quickly build arrangements. Use new region looping capabilities to assemble grooves or fill time between video cues. Apply groove input quantization to alter the feel of MIDI tracks as you record. With these and many more features, Pro Tools 7 software is what composers have been waiting for.

Tweaking Encouraged
Experiment more freely with MIDI tracks using new real-time MIDI processing capabilities. Capitalize on mirrored MIDI editing to automatically alter copies of MIDI regions throughout a session. Use the new Zoom Toggle button to quickly enter an editor view mode for easy editing of audio and MIDI. Choose the new Link Track and Edit Selection option to apply track-level commands across multiple tracks at the same time. In addition to these features, nearly every MIDI operation window includes enhancements, making it faster and easier to work with MIDI than ever before.

Greater Mixing Power and Flexibility
Enhanced support for multi-processor computers and improvements to the RTAS® environment in Pro Tools 7 software increase plug-in counts up to 150% on dual-processor computers. In many cases, you’ll be able to run more than twice as many RTAS plug-ins and virtual instruments on your sessions. (Click here for more information on RTAS performance improvements.) Additional software optimizations provide a faster, more responsive, and more powerful workstation. Plus, support for RTAS processing plug-ins on Aux Inputs and Master Faders (a new feature for Pro Tools|HD® systems) enhances compatibility between Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools LE™, and Pro Tools M-Powered™ systems.

Even Easier to Use
Even with all of its additions and improvements, Pro Tools 7 software is still one of the easiest audio applications to use. Menus have been streamlined and organized more logically, though key commands remain the same. A new Tool Tips feature provides descriptions of objects within the interface when the cursor is placed over them so you can get better acquainted with the interface.

Coming Soon.....AMS Neve 8816

Expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2006, this product is set to be one of the most exciting in recent years.

The sound of Neve has been the audio recording benchmark for several generations of engineers, musicians and producers. Wherever sound matters, from a full orchestral recording for a blockbuster film to a loan singer, from a rock drummer to an R’n’B vocal, Neve technology provides the warmth, punch and definition so sought after by modern and classic producers.

The legendary sound of Neve now becomes available to DAW based producers with the launch of the Neve 8816 Summing Mixer. Comprehensive input, mixing and monitoring functions upgrade a DAW to a professional mixing facility.

The sixteen input channels include level, pan, cut and cue controls. A +15dB gain range accommodates both -10dBv and +4dbm input levels. If sixteen inputs isn’t enough for your mix, multiple 8816 units can be cascaded together via the fixed level two track buss.

The ultimate analogue mix buss utilises classic Neve transformer mixing topology. The mix outputs appear simultaneously as balanced +4dBm and unbalanced -10dBv. Mix Inserts are pre fade for full control and can be switched between normal insert mode and mastering style sum and difference mode with stereo width control. A post insert mix function can be used for mixing in a separate stem or blending the mix with a special effect.

An optional digital output converts the analogue mix to any standard PCM sample rate up to 192kHz or DSD, a unique feature extending Neve’s commitment to the ultimate analogue and digital sound. Output PPM meters are complimented by overload LEDs to indicate clipping at the ADC or analogue output.

The monitor section selects between Mix Out, 2 Track Return, Channels 1 & 2 (DAW mix replay) and "i-mon" front panel input min-jack, handy for quick mix comparisons. The monitor level is independent of the mix level and the monitor outputs can be switched between Main and Alt speakers. A separate Cue Output: can be fed from three sources and the inbuilt Talk Back mic. Headphones can be used to listen to either Cue or Monitor source.

A remarkable amount of mixing and monitoring technology for around £1800 but that’s not all. The final touch? The ability to recall settings! A USB connector allows snapshots of the 8816 setting to be saved to a PC and recalled ready for remix!

SSL XLogic E Signature Channel

Coming soon........

The success of the ‘E Series’ sound was born out by the rapid change in drum sounds that occurred on recordings from that period, all which took advantage of the compressors and gates in every channel. When used together with the side chain trigger options, rhythm tracks literally jumped out of the speakers. So much so, that the all the early manufacturers of digital reverbs attempted emulations of the classic SSL analogue 'gated ambience mic' drum sound with various degrees of success.

The SSL E-Series Eq also played a major role in the aggressive guitar sounds of the post punk era with ranges that immediately matched the key frequencies bands of miked guitar amps. The versatility of the processing received further positive critical endorsements as established European Broadcasters installed SSL consoles in their prestigious classical music studios and concert halls.

The E Signature Channel was extensively researched from SSL's design archives to accurately recreate the sound of the channel strip shipped with the ground breaking first generation consoles installed at the beginning of the 80's.

As even then, the design was continually evolving in response to user feedback, various key modifications have been incorporated into the E Signature Channel’s front panel switched options.

The E-Signature offers two distinctive Eq options coupled with the most musical dynamics processor available in either the analogue or digital domain. With the addition of the 'no holds barred' sound of an SSL 'Listen Mic' compressor and the new ground breaking tube emulation preamp option, the E-Strip delivers a front end with the versatility and flexibility to capture and enhance any musical performance that needs a distinctive ‘vintage’ character.

SSL X-Rack

The X-Rack is a new modular rack system that incorporates a unique Total Recall™ capability and it is launched with a mono SuperAnalogue dynamics unit as its first available module. This combination make it ideal as a stand alone dynamics processing solution for studio or live applications, or working with the flexible inserts of an AWS 900 to provide a complete ‘SSL’ channel processing solution for the console.

The X-Rack dynamics module is based on the channel dynamics unit from the XL 9000 K Series console. This incorporates compression, limiting, expansion and gating with a number of options for hard or soft knee operation and peak, or RMS sensing. All of this circuitry is designed using SSL’s acclaimed SuperAnalogue design techniques to deliver fantastic sound quality with very low noise and distortion.

The X-Rack’s recall capability provides the ability to store presets into Flash memory within the unit. This provides a simple way to save and recall favourite settings and it further integrates with the AWS 900’s Total Recall option to provide a single store of all settings that can be archived with a workstation’s project. This level of integration is right at the heart of the philosophy of workstation integration that both the XLogic and AWS 900 products set out to address.

SoundField Announces New Portable ST350 System

The new portable ST350 offers SoundField’s unique technology in a miniaturised package which can be powered by either mains or battery.

Dispensing with the compromises associated with portable recording the ST350 system consists of a lightweight multi-capsule microphone and fully featured compact mic-pre/control unit that generates surround and stereo simultaneously at balanced line levels.

The ST350 has been designed from the ground up and is the result of a long R & D programme incorporating feedback from recordists, broadcasters and SoundField users. The new microphone electronics are capable of driving long cable runs enabling the microphone to be positioned hundreds of metres away from its control unit or alternatively hand held on a short boom.

Control features include high performance mic-pre’s with discretely switched 6dB gain steps and composite 5-segment LED bargraph for level monitoring. Continuously variable control is offered over the stereo Polar Patterns from omni through to cardioid to figure-of-eight and a Width control provides everything from mono to wide image stereo. End Fire and Invert controls are provided to correct for three-dimensional microphone positioning whilst still maintaining the correct stereo and surround perspective. Other features include Hi-Pass filtering to reduce rumble/wind noise, switchable M/S output and headphone monitoring.

The ST350 can be used in conjunction with the SoundField Surround Zone software to offer a complete recording and post-production package. Surround Zone is now available on the Digidesign Pro Tools, Steinberg Nuendo and SADiE platforms.

Key AWSomation features are: Accurate fader and cut automation data
Fader Links - Group fader control
Mix Pass history - for easy revision
AutoTakeover - seamless transition from write to replay
Variable fader glide times
Fader safe mode - isolate moves from updates
Match and Play automation updates - simplifies cut automation
Mixes and Fader links are saved as Sys-ex MIDI data to retain project integrity

“The initial market reactions to the AWS 900 have been fantastic,” comments Niall Feldman, Director of Product Marketing. “The vast majority of users find it ideal for their DAW-based production requirements. Following last year’s launch of a Total Recall™ package, the single most requested additional feature has been the automation for the AWS 900. To answer that request SSL’s new AWSomation package was launched at NAB 2005, with availability shortly after the show.”

Approaching 100 systems sold since its launch earlier at NAB 2004, the AWS 900 Analogue Workstation System is SSL’s fastest selling console. It combines the dual benefits of SuperAnalogue™ processing and sophisticated digital control, providing a complete solution for use with Digital Audio Workstations in professional audio applications.

Anthony DeMaria Labs

KMR Audio have been appointed as the exclusive UK distributors for US valve outboard manufacturer Anthony DeMaria Labs.
The range currently consists of three highly regarded pieces.
The SCL1500 is a stereo valve compressor/limiter that makes the mix loud and fat. The CL1000 is the mono version with a strong reputation for tracking bass. Both units have been in production for over a decade and have been used on countless recordings throughout the world by the likes of Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage), Flood (U2, Depeche Mode), the Rolling Stones and the Michael Jackson band.
The 300G is a stereo valve DI box with three valves per channel, and transformer balanced outputs.
At the very top of the range, and made to order is the ADL 670. This is a lovingly crafted part for part re-creation of the Fairchild 670, with fourteen transformers and twenty valves (including eight of the very rare 6386 valves). The range is now available for testing at the KMR building. See the catalogue section for more details.

Jam & Lewis

With their new private recording facility in Santa Monica, California due for completion early next year, producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have at least one portion of the studio ready. The production team responsible for a slew of platinum recordings from artists such as Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Usher and many others has taken delivery of five new Solid State Logic AWS 900 Analogue Workstation Systems with Total Recall.

Flyte Tyme, as Jam & Lewis’s team is known, is the most successful production duo in contemporary music, with more than 100 gold, platinum and multi-platinum records. With the AWS 900, they’re able to take advantage of two crucial components of their production method: the signature sound of the Solid State Logic SuperAnalogue signal path, and total integration with the DAW platforms they use to create their magic.

Lewis is particularly ecstatic about Flyte Tyme’s new boards. “It's nice to finally have a console that seamlessly blends the analogue and digital studio world," he says. "The AWS 900 sounds wide, open, and punchy like an SSL should. We are loving it!”

“We are very excited about the placement of five AWS 900 consoles with Flyte Tyme,” says Rick Plushner, president of Solid State Logic North America. “Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are clearly at the top of the industry and their interest in the AWS 900 firmly supports our engineering decision to create this console/workstation controller.”

While construction of the new studio was being completed, the pair and their long-time staff engineers Matt Marrin and Ian Cross took over the third floor of LA’s famous Village Recorder studio. The team has already begun using their AWS 900s for recording projects.

Bob Ludwig chooses X-Logic

US based Mastering legend Bob Ludwig of Gateway Mastering Studios recently took delivery of two Solid State Logic XLogic compressors from Professional Audio Design (PAD). The XLogic Multichannel Compressor will reside in the room primarily operated by Bob Ludwig and will handle the ever-growing demand for surround mastering, while the XLogic G Series Compressor will be located in the stereo room operated by Ludwig’s protégé Adam Ayan.

“In the analogue domain, there are very few compressors that are specifically designed for 5.1 operations,” says Ludwig, who has done mastering projects from Bruce Springsteen to Bare Naked Ladies. “The SSL XLogic 5.1 has several unique features, such as the filter for the low frequency and the ability to change which channels you want to control together, making it a great choice for our application. SSL has been a leader in the recording business for a very long time and part of the company’s famous sound for rock records is its bus compressor. Being able to have a 5.1 version of the SSL bus compressor is really appropriate for many rock projects, as well as for others.”

1st AWS900 Installed

Solid State Logic has delivered the UK’s first AWS 900 Analogue Workstation System to ICC Studios, a residential facility that offers two, fully equipped music recording studios and mastering facilities.

KMR Audio, exclusive UK distributor for the AWS 900, supplied the console to ICC via Don Larking of TL Commerce. It has been installed in the facility’s Studio One control room, which has recently been acoustically upgraded by studio design consultants, Recording Architecture.

Commenting on the decision to buy an AWS 900, ICC’s studio manager Neil Costello says: “The launch of the AWS 900 Analogue Workstation caused us to completely re-think our original plans for studio one. About a year ago we removed our old analogue console and installed an HD Pro Tools system with Pro Control, which we were running alongside a number of external mic pre-amps. Although this was more suited to the way in which today’s clients’ work, we felt that the system was very ‘bitty’ and we were considering buying a new console to rationalise the signal path.

“However, before we had a chance to order a new desk we heard about the AWS 900 and that immediately made us put the brakes on. We’d always felt that what we needed was a top quality DAW, but until SSL launched the AWS 900 there wasn’t anything on the market that really satisfied our criteria. It didn’t take us long to realise that the AWS 900 was perfect for our requirements because it allowed us to have all our inputs in one box - and have the unit located in the centre of the room, which is where clients want it. Although it was more expensive than the console we were considering buying, we feel it is a valid investment because it gives us the best of both worlds – an easy to operate analogue front end combined with a high quality digital controller and SSL’s sonic excellence.”

Niki Melville–Rogers, head consultant at KMR Audio, adds: “We are delighted that a studio of ICC’s standing has become the first facility in the UK to buy an AWS 900. Since its launch we have had numerous enquiries about the system and have held a number of successful demo evenings, which have resulted in some very positive sales leads from both commercial facilities and private studio owners. The AWS 900 is exactly what the industry has been waiting for and we feel very bullish about its future.”

Originally founded as Echo Studios to produce gospel radio shows, ICC Studios in one of the UK’s oldest residential studios having been in operation since 1976. Located in a quiet Mews, in buildings that were once stables for the adjacent Grand Hotel, ICC Studios has an enviable client list that ranges from musical legends such as Sir Paul McCartney to relative newcomers Toploader, as well as the BBC, live Big Bands and children’s choirs.

TC MD3 For PowerCore

TC Electronic announce their fabulous MD3 for the PowerCore platform.

Mastering Tools from System 6000
With the introduction of the MD3 Stereo Mastering package for PowerCore, processing only known from the System 6000 is now available for your PC or MAC. This package brings professional production and mastering possibilities to the realm of DAWs, and integrates smoothly with serious music and film editing applications.

The MD3 Stereo Mastering package for PowerCore includes two pristine algorithms, MD3 Multiband Dynamics and BrickWall Limiter:

MD3 Multiband Dynamics
Dual Mono and Stereo dynamics processing in three frequency bands. By offering a true side-chain split structure, MD3 is also capable of demanding mono material compression/limiting on two separate channels, not found in other multi-band dynamics processors. MD3 can be regarded as a high-end mastering tool. M and S components of a stereo signal can be processed separately and provide even more control making full use of the Spectral Stereo Enhancer.

Brickwall Limiter
If you are concerned about audio quality at the end listener, or have a desire to conserve talent, the BrickWall Limiter is the solution. While it cannot prevent destruction of dynamic range from happening at earlier stages in the production process, it does get rid of the signals known to generate distortion in consumer CD players, radio processors and data reduction codecs.

Drawmer 1968 on Demonstration

The simply stunning stereo compressor from Drawmer is now here at the KMR building.

Based on the exceptional compressor design found in the Drawmer 1969 “M-E” Mic Pre/DI/Compressor, the 1968 “M-E” features improved metering and function with the incorporation of separate “big” switches for each channel, making it ideal for use in both tracking and stereo compression applications.

The 1968 Mercenary Edition's gain reduction cell is the same FET compressor with variable tube output stages as the 1969 “M-E”, giving it a rich euphonic tone with the speed and musical grace made famous by the 1969 Mercenary Edition.
And all this for a very reasonable £949 Including VAT

Come and put it through its paces.

New Fearn

Dw Fearn VT7 - Dual Mono Valve Compressor

The VT-7 has an all Class-A vacuum tube audio path, like all Fearn products. The gain reduction elements utilize circuitry that duplicates the sound and characteristics of the finest classic vacuum tube compressors, without depending on tubes that are no longer manufactured. The control circuitry is modern solid-state analogue.

The two channels may be used independently or linked together for stereo.

Controls: Threshold, Gain, Attack, Release, Curve, and Link. The VU meters can be switched between output level and gain reduction.

This compressor has a unique sound. It is highly transparent, adding only loudness to the audio without introducing obvious artifacts. The compression curves can be adjusted from very gentle to moderately hard. Like all our products, the VT-7 Compressor is designed to process high-quality audio and make it sound great. This compressor is not intended to be used as an obvious effect. It is more like having an engineer with infinitely quick hands on the faders.

It should be here around October/November, pricing should be similar to the VT2.

PMC have just released active versions of their classic TB2 and DB1 models :

The DB1S-A and TB2S-A are compact, 2-way monitor designs, employing unique technology in the form of PMC's advanced Transmission Line design and Flying Mole digital Bi-Phase Fusion amplification.
Both models provide characteristic PMC resolution, LF extension and balanced frequency response, consistent at all volume levels.
Proprietary LF drivers and cabinet design, along with high quality, hand-built crossover electronics, ensure ultra low distortion and compression characteristics, enabling consistent performance at high SPLs.

The DB1S-A and TB2S-A incorporate PMC 140 mm and 170 mm LF Doped drivers respectively and both models feature the 27 mm soft dome tweeter used in the company's larger mid-field designs.
Both models are powered digitally by Flying Mole reference amplifier modules, each weighing just 650 grams and supplying 160W into 4 ohms, providing world-leading PMC studio monitoring at a new and highly competitive cost advantage.

TC Mastering at AES Berlin 2004

At AES in Berlin, TC Electronic introduced the Mastering 6000, a four-engine mastering processor based on the company’s award-winning multi-channel processing platform, System 6000. Also announced is the 1.5 update of the highly acclaimed Restoration Suite, a set of audio restoration tools for PowerCore.

Mastering 6000
Mastering 6000 is a custom set of precise timing and high-resolution digital signal processing tools designed specifically for mastering engineers producing high-quality audio for CD, DVD, SACD and film.

Mastering 6000 has a license-based structure, which enables it to be augmented with optional processing tools. New limiting and compression algorithms in Mastering 6000 include MD4, featuring a 5-band stereo and MS processor with linear phase split filter topology, an updated Brickwall Limiter that prevents listening fatigue and distortion using internal sample rates of up to 480 kHz (5 times upsampling) and new custom A/D and D/A conversion filters. For multichannel productions, Mastering 6000 also includes 5.1 multi-band compressor/expander, 5.1 limiter and 5.1/stereo monitor matrix.

The Mastering 6000 hardware features extraordinary jitter rejection, the ability to handle analog inputs of up to +30 dBu, the capability to deal with hot digital level without distorting and 48-bit internal resolution.
Optional licenses for Mastering 6000 include reverbs and delays from Reverb 6000, Massenburg Design Works Hi-Res EQ, BackDrop noise reduction, and UnWrap advanced stereo to 5.1 conversion.

Restoration Suite 1.5
Restoration Suite version 1.5 adds a new DeCrackle plug-in as well as processing improvements to the three existing audio restoration tools: DeClick, DeNoise and DeScratch.

Like DeScratch, the DeCrackle algorithm was developed by Noveltech in Finland. It is specifically designed to remove artifacts ranging from 1 to 20 samples long. Crackles typically manifest as constant surface noise, like what is heard in the background of a record. As with all plug-ins in the suite, DeCrackle has an audition feature, which can be used to playback only the noise that has been removed from the signal.

The DeNoise plug-in has been updated with an 'auto' mode that makes it possible to remove noise from material where it is not possible to take a fingerprint - for instance if there are no parts with noise only. Fingerprints can now be adjusted independently for left and right channels.

The DeScratch plug-in's ‘high quality’ mode has been improved significantly with new interpolation algorithms, and the DeClick plug-in features enhanced detection algorithms.

The 1.5 upgrade will be free for existing users.

ALPHA 24

PRESS RELEASE - PRELIMINARY NEWS FROM NEW DESK MANUFACTURER - ANALOGUE CONSOLE TECHNOLOGY
A unique concept desk set to be an audiophile icon. The Alpha 24 is designed to be at the heart of a 21st Century studio, and incorporates many ideas that make it ideal as a mixing desk for the modern world.
The modern recording method is to use input channels and stand alone microphone pre-amplifiers. The Alpha 24 does not duplicate these facilities. All of the technical investment applied to this console has gone into guaranteeing the highest audio performane possible. Couple an Alpha 24 with a DAW, and input channel of your choice along with a heavy weight analogue stereo compressor and EQ for a truly awesome studio set up. It has become apparent that combining signals in the analogue domain that are coming from the digital domain ensures a higher sound quality end product than when mixing entirely within the computer. Many people want to personalise their sound with analogue outboard; one of the key features of the Alpha 24 is that it has balanced inserts, which is unprecedented at this price point.

All analogue high headroom circuitry and a minimal signal path philosophy, give the Alpha 24 a super quiet, open sound. Built for mixing and uniquely featuring balanced XLR inserts on ALL channels and masters. Also featuring variable impedance line inputs, 8 balanced aux sends per channel, 4 balanced stereo aux returns with mutes, individual mutes on aux 1 and solos on everything. No EQ, no mic-pres no group routing. Extreme phase coherency. Massive head room in the mix amp.

The Alpha 24 is designed to maximise the outboard revolution to customise and individualise your sound. It also takes advantage of the significant price drop in high bit rate computer I/O, plug in DSP, and 24 track hard disk recorders. Other notable features of the Alpha 24 include insert I/O switching, 100mm faders, large illuminated mute and solo buttons, switching matrix for three sets of speakers, virtual tracking buss with balanced inserts and routing switch, substantial build quality, padded arm rest, scribble strip, MIDI muting and transport control options. Comes in 16, 24, 32, 40 and 48 input configurations.

No image is available as yet. Keep watching this space for more news of this eargerly awaited product.
