Superb headphones well suited to home studio mixing Review by TimDjango (Posted on 29/07/2013)
Quoting Mike Senior of Sound on Sound; "top- of-the-range studio monitoring headphones are capable of doing many of the jobs you’d expect of speakers, which is great for situations where you only have limited access to decent nearfields".

As a home studio buff, I only have so much money to invest in monitoring equipment, even in spite of its obvious importance. For this reason, currently, it makes sense to use headphones rather than a set of near-fields, since this does away with the need for damping the room and buying eye-wateringly expensive set of monitors (although no doubt, this will happen).

I found this Beyerdynamics extremely well suited to many of the tasks of nearfields- assessing sound quality and judging stereo imaging. They are utterly transparent and give a strong impression of listening to the 'sounds' rather than the music, without hype. The stereo imaging is pinpoint accurate- I put on an A.C Newman record and discovered several instruments I had never consciously heard before. Clipping and dropouts are immediately identifiable, as is background hum. All in all this is a brilliant product for dealing in raw sound. Additionally they are super comfortable, clad in a luxuriant velvety thing that keeps my ears snug and warm.

They are less useful on several fronts. Firstly, they do not sound like 'normal' headphones in the same manner as Near-fields do not sound like normal speakers. This requires the later additional use of cheap headphones as well as the ubiquitous Auratone secondary reference monitor. Secondly, they cannot be used for tracking, as the open backs leak more than Julian Assange.

I have personally found these an incredibly useful tool in the home studio and would recommend them to all who seek high quality, neutral sound for a variety of purposes.
