Dave Smith is a legendary character in the field of synthesis, one of the pioneers behind the MIDI protocol and the man responsible for all those iconic Sequential Circuits synths from the 1980's.

Based in San Francisco, California, Dave Smith Instruments was founded in 2005 and is widely regarded as the company responsible for bringing affordable analogue synthesis to the masses, with their Mopho Synth Module.

The release of the Mopho is heralded as the point at where the resurgence of analogue synthesizers began. Up until its release, the world of synths had been ruled almost exclusively by workstations and ROMplers.

It wasn’t until DSI decided to distil single voice of their highly regarded Prophet ’08 into a desktop module (and make it cheap!) did people get turned back onto analogue synthesizers, it melded a true analogue voice, with a rich modulation matrix and DSI’s now classic Curtis Filter design, at a price unlike anything previously available.

From there countless companies have moved back to analogue designs, with the range of affordable analogue synthesizers, being larger than it ever has been. This was all because of the Mopho.

Since then, DSI have released multiple synthesizers: The Mopho x4, Prophet 12, Prophet 6, Pro 2, Rev 2 and in conjunction with Tom Oberheim, the polyphonic powerhouse OB-6. Of course, Dave Smiths heritage runs deeper than DSI’s innovations, as mentioned before he was responsible for some of the greatest synthesis innovations under the Sequential Circuits brand name all the way up until 1987.

The Prophet 5 produced in 1978 to 1984 is probably the most iconic machine attributed to Dave Smith. It was the culmination of Dave Smith and John Bowen (of Solaris fame) and it was the very first programmable analogue synthesizer to provide preset patch memory, it provided five full voices of polyphony and was the first synth to include the very distinguishable Curtis filter chip.

Dave continued to innovate, whilst staying true to his rich heritage and ethos of what a synthesizer should and should not be. DSI have always been on the cutting edge when it comes to sound quality, workflow and feature sets.

We offer the complete Dave Smith Instrument range both online and in store. We always have a DSI synth on demo in our London Showroom and we’re happy to provide expert advice.
