Like Abbey Road, Sunset Sound is one of those recording studios whose name transcends the pro audio world for ever associated to iconic bands and albums. Indeed Sunset Sound is invariably linked to The Doors, Led Zeppelin or even Van Halen. That’s not to say that Sunset Sound wasn’t at the heart of countless other classics including for Disney cartoons.
Founded in 1962 by Tutti Camarata who had been rejected from Walt Disney, Sunset Sound was built on an old car repair garage. Soon after its creation Disney would record in Studio One churning classic soundtracks for Bambi, Mary Poppins, 101 Dalmatians and many more. Soon after, Sunset Sound would become host to all the biggest names in the music industry including Bing Crosby, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Crosby Stills Nash, Miles Davis, Beach Boys, Louis Armstrong, Janis Joplin and countless more.
Unlike many iconic big recording facilities that have had to closed down (we can all remember Olympic Studios) Sunset Sound has managed to carry on despite a few setbacks and in 2012 celebrated its 50th Anniversary. To celebrate they turned to Paul Wolf to design a 500-series module that would deliver the sound that the studio was famed for. Thus was born the S1P Tutti 500-series mic preamp which is a faithful replica of the API mic pre that still graces Studio One to this day. This preamp was loved by engineers and vocalists for the power and natural presence it gave to vocals.
