The Buchla Music Easel (Modern) is a versatile and innovative synthesiser system that comprises several modules, including the Stored Program Sound Source Model 208C, the Touch Activated Voltage Source Model 218e (v3), and the Electric Music Box Input/Output (EMBIO). Together, these modules offer musicians a rich and diverse range of sonic possibilities.

At the heart of the Music Easel (Modern) is the 208C Stored Program Sound Source. This module features a complex oscillator and a modulation oscillator capable of producing various waveforms. Additionally, a noise generator is included, allowing for intricate sound design. The 208C also incorporates a five-stage sequencer, envelope generator, pulser, and modulation source with switchable triggers, enabling the creation of complex patterns and evolving textures. The dual low pass gate provides dynamic control over tone and amplitude, delivering natural-sounding decay and sustain. Modulation sources such as a random voltage generator, envelope generator, modulation oscillator, and envelope detector can be utilised to modulate different parameters through the extensive patch field, adding movement, texture, and complexity. Furthermore, the 208C features a mixer section with spring reverb for further sonic exploration.

Complementing the 208C is the Touch Activated Voltage Source Model 218e (v3). This module, first introduced in the original 1973 Buchla Music Easel, provides a piano-like key layout for intuitive control. The latest version, the 218e (v3), incorporates stable and modern electronics, offering heightened sensitivity and accuracy. Thanks to its adjustable sensor with a wide dynamic range and durability, even the lightest touch produces triggers and control voltages. The new texture enhances sensing capabilities and provides a satisfying tactile experience. Pressure sensitivity adds an expressive output, introducing an extra dimension to control. MIDI outputs velocity, polyphony, and channel pressure, making the 218e a uniquely expressive controller. The module includes a portamento and an arpeggiator driven by external inputs, allowing interaction with automated notes for complex patterns. Additional controls enable the blending of different patterns and introduce randomness, transitioning from expected to surprising results. The classic preset voltage knobs offer diverse ways to manipulate sounds, serving as quick access points for voltages, controlling arpeggiation modes, and octave shifting.

Pads on the module output pulses for additional control. The 218e also provides an interface to play existing MIDI gear and software synthesisers. Each touch outputs note name, channel pressure, velocity for every note, and sustain controls from a pedal. Polyphonic MIDI mode enables chord playing, and the touch strip can function as a pitch bend control or mod wheel for enhanced expressiveness. Configuration is straightforward using the front panel controls, enabling notes and controls to be sent on any MIDI channel.

The Music Easel is tied with the Electric Music Box Input/Output (EMBIO) module. This module includes MIDI output (mini jack and USB) and CV output from the 218e, MIDI input to the 208C, and audio output from the 208C. The Audio Mixer provides Additional creative control, allowing integration with other Buchla modules and systems, as well as the CV conditioners and controls. The slew control can transform the sequencer into a modulator with wave-like characteristics or add smoothness to a square LFO. The attenuator and crossfader enable the exploration of new voltage levels and combinations from existing sources. The pulse converter offers novel triggering rhythms, while a simple LFO is an additional valuable modulator. These features expand the sonic possibilities and encourage experimentation within the Buchla Music Easel system.
