Digidesign was a company that was founded in 1984 by Peter Gotcher and Evan Brooks. Initially, the company focused on creating digital signal processing hardware for the music industry, but they soon shifted their focus to creating software-based digital audio workstations.

In 1991, Digidesign released its flagship product, Pro Tools, quickly becoming the standard for digital audio recording, editing, and mixing. The software was initially only available on the Macintosh platform but later expanded to Windows.

In 1998, Avid Technology, a well-known company for its video editing software, acquired Digidesign. Avid saw the acquisition as a strategic move to expand its product offerings into the audio market.

Under Avid's ownership, Digidesign continued to develop Pro Tools and other related software and hardware products. They also introduced the Digidesign/Avid Venue line of live sound consoles, widely adopted in the live sound industry.

In 2010, Avid rebranded Digidesign as the Avid Audio division, which included the Pro Tools software and hardware products. The move was seen as an effort to unify the company's brand and streamline its product offerings.

Today, Avid continues developing and marketing Pro Tools software and related products, which remain the industry standard for digital audio workstations. The company has also expanded into other areas, such as media asset management, cloud-based collaboration, and video editing.
