The Erica Synths Syntrx is a three-oscillator analogue synthesizer with a digitally-controlled Matrix to provide a seemingly infinite number of sonic options to bring your music to a whole new level.

Not a Synthi Clone

The Erica Synths Syntrx shares a striking resemblance with the legendary EMS Synthi A which served as the inspiration behind the user interface. The original Synthi AKS has been a favourite synthesizer for experimental musicians all over the world thanks in no part to its user interface that lent itself to sonic explorations.

While Syntrx’s interface resembles that of the Synthi, it has been developed entirely from the ground up by the team at Erica Synth.

Powerful voicing and sound shaping

Syntrx boasts 3 VCOs capable of highly accurate tracking over 8 octaves. VCO1 and 2 feature waveshaping capabilities and controls over the level of both wave shapes. VCO1 includes a Sine and Sawtooth while VCO 2 includes a Pulse and Sawtooth/Triangle shapes. VCO1 includes an octave switch to quickly select the desired octave, while VCO2 can sync to VCO1.

VCO3 can function as a third oscillator or as an LFO with similar function and wave shapes as VCO2. The combination of the two wave shapes allows for the creation of complex waveforms.

The Filter section uses a resonant low-pass filter capable of self-oscillation with the resonance pushed high. Syntrx also includes a Ring Modulator to create complex harmonics and bell-like tones which combined with any of the two external inputs can create robotic voices similar to the sound of the Daleks in Doctor Who. Both external inputs boast their own level controls and a switch to accommodate the input level of the source such as a microphone, line-level or instrument level.

A Zener diode-based noise generator produces white noise and includes an adjustable colour control that tilts the noise colour from a darker low frequency to the brighter -high-passed noise. The setting in the middle provides the unfiltered white noise. A level control offers manual control of the desired amount of noise.

The Noise can be used for voltage sources for the Sample and Hold section, creating stepped random Voltages.

The Envelope generator section is another nod to the Synthi with a unique trapezoidal design. Unlike traditional ADSR envelopes, the Trapezoid section includes Attack, On, Decay, and Off. On affects the hold time while off controls the time between cycles.

The Decay section can be voltage-controlled via the patch matrix. Looping can be deactivated in which case it can be initialised using the external gate input with an external MIDI controller.

The trapezoid section includes a built-in VCA where audio can be routed to using the matrix. In that scenario, the contour of the envelope will shape the loudness of the input signal.

Extensive Patching possibilities

At the core of the Syntrx is the Synthi-like 16x16 digital LED matrix that includes inputs and outputs for each of the “modules” featuring on the synthesizer, that’s a total of 256 patching points.

Replacing the old-school pins, the matrix includes two encoders to move through the X and Y axes which make a connection when the right encoder is pressed. The Left encoder can be used to attenuate the connections. It offers a choice of four total values ranging between 1, 07, 0.3, and 0.

Patches can easily be saved and recalled offering a great way of moving from one piece to another during live performances.

Old-school and New Controls

In addition to the usual ways to control this synthesizer the Syntrx features a Joystick that can be used to control two bipolar control voltages at the same time. Each CV can be assigned to the desired parameters. It has a range of +/-5V and can be used for modulating VCO, the filter cutoff and much more. the Joystick even offers the possibility of summing CC messages with on of the axes for even more controls.

Syntrx also accepts MIDI and external CV/Gate via the rear of the unit. It accepts MIDI note-on and note-off messages, Mod wheel, pitch wheel and two configurable MIDI CC Messages. The gate is directly routed to the trapezoid input while CV input one is assigned to all three oscillators. A CV2 input can also control VCO 2, allowing for paraphonic applications.

Additional functions.

A physical spring reverb is also included and as such it is susceptible to mechanical vibrations and noise including sound coming from the built-in speakers. The speakers can be used for sound design purposes like creating wild feedback loops with the spring reverb. The amount of reverb is controlled via a dry/wet mix.

An output stage is included with controls over panning and level controls and an output filter that tilts the sound either towards high or low frequencies.

This extremely deep synthesizer is a dream for all sound designers and musicians, providing powerful sound-shaping tools and combinations that take the users towards a gratifying journey into sound exploration.
