Masterchord Studio owes its existence to the infectious passion of its Italian owner Michele, whose love for music and sonic purity is only matched by his desire to make the artists he works with achieve their best work.
Built from the ground up, Masterchord studio is a privately owned state-of-the-art recording facility, located in Finchley, North London in the middle of a beautiful residential area. When entering Masterchord Studio one cannot help but be blown away by the sheer size of the studio which is invisible from the outside. A welcoming rest room and charming host will provide for your every needs with gorgeous Italian coffee and high quality tea and everything is done to make you at ease as soon as you enter.
First we find the beautifully crafted control room which houses a 5.1 monitoring system with 3 ATC SCM110ASL as front left, right and centre and two ATC SCM25 as rear Left and right monitors surrounding a beautiful 40-channel Oram mixing desk. The control room sounds impressively neutral and every detail of the music shines through the monitors. A 48-channel Pro tools HDX system is also located in a dedicated computer room to avoid any noise during mixing. In addition Masterchord boasts a comprehensive collection of some of the finest outboard from the likes of Neve, Manley, Chandler, Tree Audio, API, Tube-Tech, Maag Audio, Empirical Labs, Bricasti and more.
The live room is as impressive as the control room for different reasons; the live room is truly a work of innovation, using many different acoustic properties to provide a wide range of tonalities and a soundstage that seems bigger than it actually is, although it can accommodate a small orchestra. At the centre proudly stands a Steinway Grand Choda Model D grand piano which sounds as glorious as it looks stunning under the bright lights showering the main live room. An additional 4 smaller rooms are also used to record drums, guitars and bass all looking on the main live room.
Each of the three rooms has its own subtle sonic identity. A carefully selected microphone collection including studio staples from Royer, Neumann, Schoeps, AKG, Josephson, Coles, Sennheiser, Electrovoice offers a wide range of tonal options to captures the artist’s vision at its best. Guitarists are also well catered for with a nice collection of amps, from Fender, Vox and a few of Michele’s absolute favourite Marshall.
Everything about Masterchord Studio is a labour of love and it shows; it’s not only impressive in terms of acoustics and equipment, it also rivals some of the finest commercial facilities with a extremely high level of craftsmanship.
