Korg MS-20 Mini Analogue Synthesizer

The Korg MS-20 mini is a faithful recreation of the legendary semi-modular analogue synthesizer Korg MS-20.

Overseen by the engineers who created the original, the MS-20 mini features the complete and exact replication of the original analogue circuitry in a smaller chassis. It features the same architecture comprising two oscillators (VCO) with ring mod, two filters (VCF), two improved amplification (VCA) with a much lower noise, two envelopes (EG) and one LFO.

The filters on the original MS-20 were one of the true wonders of this classic synthesizer and feature here in all their glory. Powerful and radical the MS-20’s VCF section was capable of producing an uncompromising sound with a very distinctive distortion and self-oscillation. With the resonance all the way up, the self-oscillation of the MS-20 was non-linear and produced some unique and dramatic tonal changes that can be heard on countless electronic pop classics. The Korg MS-20 mini features the very first design of the acclaimed filters which exhibited a more radical sound and favoured by most musicians.

The Korg MS-20 mini also features the same patch panel as the original but uses 1/8th mini jack connectors instead of the ¼ inch jack used on its semi-modular ancestor. Inserting a patch cable (or several) can open up a world of possibilities only limited by the user’s imagination. Several functions are only accessible through the patch panel like the LFO Square waveform for example. Different combinations of modulation input/output and trigger, Sample and Hold and noise generator can generate an incredible variety of sounds.

The Korg MS-20 mini’s size is 86% of the original but doesn’t feel crammed. Its vertical chassis displays clearly the exact same panel printing as the original. As a result the Korg MS-20 mini uses a mini keyboard which is 86% of the original and therefore does not affect the player’s performance.

The Korg MS-20 mini features some useful upgrades however. For example, the VCA is much quieter than on the original and also features MIDI IN and USB connectors ensuring that the Korg MS-20 fits it any modern project.

An impressive amount of care and effort has been put into the creation of the MS-20 Mini by tracking original components or careful substitution when there was no other alternative, that the MS-20 mini sounds just like a brand new MS-20 did at the time.
