The Soundman Dummy Head is used in combination with OKM in-ear microphones to provide binaural recordings.
The Soundman Dummy Head (aka John to his friends) is made of MDF with skin coloured moulded pinnae providing an exact replica of an ear to truly recreate the reflection that happen on the ear before reaching the microphone.
John features a high-grade steel plate on the bottom with threads to use with microphone stands.
Binaural recording is often used to create a 3D stereo sound sensation and recreate the feeling of being in the same room with the performers. This effect only works when listening back on headphones but can produce certain interesting colouration in certain recording context and producers like Tchad Blake use binaural systems as overhead microphones.
